Rise and shine cruisers! It was an early morning wake up on the east coast to catch our Alaska Airways 6:30 AM flight from Philadelphia to San Francisco with a short layover in Portland. Our first class tickets were purchased using American Airline points from a combination of prior trips and smart use of the American Airlines AAdvantage Aviator credit card from barclaycard. Early flights have a few benefits. The airport isn’t extremely busy at 5:00 AM and together with TSA precheck you can sail through security and get settled for the 5 hour and 18 minute first leg to Portland. You will experience some breathtaking scenery flying into the Pacific Northwest! We are staying at the Courtyard Marriot Fisherman’s Wharf which is a few short steps from the bayside attractions and fresh seafood. Although we follow a plant based diet at home we will certainly try the local specialities while traveling as it is rare and appropriate. Another trick when traveling is to combat jet lag by getting out into the sunshine and fresh air for a walk while you force yourself to adapt to the local time by eating at appropriate meal times in your new time zone and staying awake until a reasonable bed time. You will find yourself refreshed the next morning ready to enjoy your vacation. We sampled fresh crab and shrimp on Fisherman’s Wharf, shared a sourdough bowl filled with clam chowder from Boudin Bakery and finished off the day with Dim Sum. Tomorrow we will head out to the Rock to tour Alcatraz!
